Understanding trauma: Finding your path to healing

By Angela F. Gilmer, LCSW  /  August 17, 2026

Trauma can affect how we think, feel, and experience the world around us. You may feel overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or stuck in survival mode long after a difficult experience has passed. While these reactions can be challenging, healing is possible.

Recovery from trauma begins with creating a sense of safety and support. Establishing healthy routines, practicing grounding techniques, and connecting with trusted people can help you feel more present and in control. Taking care of your physical health through sleep, nutrition, and movement can also support emotional healing.

Many people find that trauma impacts their relationships, self-esteem, and ability to cope with everyday stress. Learning to recognize triggers, set healthy boundaries, and develop effective coping strategies can help you regain confidence and feel more emotionally balanced in daily life. Over time, these skills can help you feel more empowered and connected to yourself and others.

It’s important to remember that healing is not a linear process. Some days may feel easier than others, and that’s okay. Showing yourself compassion and recognizing small steps forward can make a meaningful difference over time.

Working with a trauma-informed therapist can provide additional support, helping you develop coping skills, process difficult experiences, and build resilience. With the right tools and support, it is possible to move beyond the impact of trauma and create a life that feels more balanced, connected, and fulfilling.
